From Vision to Reality:
The Journey to The Well Initiative Women's Association

Hand Touching Water to Create a Ripple Effect

Founded on January 1, 2013, The Well Initiative originated as a blog and a group, inspired by the enduring story of the Woman at the Well. This powerful narrative reveals not only the unjust marginalization she faced but, more importantly, how she ultimately discovered life and a profound sense of belonging beyond societal judgments based on her gender, ethnicity, and relationship history.

At the heart of The Well Initiative stands its visionary founder, Dorothy "Dee" Smith. Grounded in her own journey as a woman who ventured along unconventional paths to self-discovery, her dedication to service, and the power of authentic connections that give life its meaning, Dee aspired to create a nurturing haven for women. This haven would be where they could thrive and find a sisterhood of support, regardless of their unique journeys, and serve as a reminder to savor life's moments while celebrating and investing in the immense strength and impact women have when they unite.

Dee shared this powerful vision with three remarkable women: Shanika “Niki” Hatcher, Mignon Cade (Lott), and Adrienne Johnson. Shanika and Mignon wholeheartedly embraced the concept, igniting the idea of supporting a community baby shower as a united front, embodying the spirit of togetherness and celebration.

In 2014, Dorothy unveiled the initial version of The Well Initiative's website. Over the years spanning 2015 to 2019, she engaged in thorough research to identify the gaps that needed addressing within the women's community. Opening her heart and sharing her vision with trusted individuals, she received invaluable feedback and suggestions that further fueled her determination. Dorothy took the pivotal step of assembling an interim advising Board who shared her commitment to bringing The Well Initiative's vision to tangible reality.

The year 2021 marked a significant milestone. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and necessary internal shifts aimed at upholding our collective mission and values above all else, The Well Initiative Women's Association achieved formal incorporation. Under the steadfast guidance of Dorothy "Dee" Smith and the leadership of its official Board of Directors—comprising Nicco Russell, Mignon Cade, Shanika Hatcher, Linda Reese, Tamara Bland, Chardae Brockman, and Camille Lang—The Well Initiative has continued its journey of growth, fulfilling its mission to uplift and empower women.

The story of The Well Initiative Women's Association is a testament to the power of vision, collaboration, and unyielding dedication. With each passing year, it gains momentum and impact, touching lives and making a meaningful difference in the community.
